Cervantes VR in the classroom

Now that the classes are empty and the students and teachers are enjoying their vacations, we would like to remember the virtual reality day that we lived with the students of the CEIP "Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo" in Madrid the last week of the course.

Invited by the teachers, we went to school loaded with virtual reality glasses to share with the children the virtual reality experience that we have created together with RTVE and the Ministry of Culture, “Cervantes VR”.

After a brief talk about the history of this technology and the different applications that virtual reality has in our society, we move on to the moment most desired by all children, traveling through the golden age and visiting the birthplace of Don Miguel thanks to reality. virtual.

The surprised faces, the laughter, the shouts and the raised hands asking to be next confirmed once again the infinite possibilities of virtual reality in the field of education. “Cervantes VR” made them travel to Spain in the 17th century, the students teleported from their desks to the battle of Lepanto, they visited the birthplace of Don Miguel in Alcala de Henares, the Algiers prison and the Campo de Criptana mills . They learned from the hand of Don Quixote and Sancho the origins of the modern novel or the theater of the comedy pens.

Being in that class surrounded by children, full of illusion and desire to learn made us relive our childhood. Some of us remember the slides with which those great teachers explained to us the cathedrals or the composition of the atom. Today, it is already possible to go further and get the student to discover first-hand the origins of Gothic art or play with their hands manipulating electrons and protons.

Thanks to virtual reality, teachers and parents have a new tool for the education of our children. A technology that allows you to travel to remote times, manipulate objects or discover the interior of the cell through immersion, interactivity and play.

Projects and experiences are being carried out all over the world to bring this technology closer to the classroom, take advantage of its potential and eliminate barriers. Projects like Google Expeditions or Oculus Education Pilot are allowing any student to discover a new world through virtual reality.

Paraphrasing the African proverb "To educate a child the entire tribe is necessary" we could say "The tribe already has a new and magical tool to educate children, let's take advantage of it".
